If you are searching for “How To Get Your Trees Ready For Summer In Phoenix, AZ 2021” this is the guide for you. Summer in Arizona is famous for sunny days and intense heat. While we spend the summer staying cool inside with our AC the plants and trees in our landscapes do not enjoy such luxuries. To keep them healthy, strong, and beautiful there are some things to keep in mind.

WHICH TREES TO SELECT

The plant stock you choose should be of great quality and the type of trees you choose should be ones with lower growth amount along the main trunk. It’s very possible that if you choose the right type of trees for summer that you won’t even need guying or staking. When selecting trees at your local nursery it is important to choose drought resistant trees. These select species are better prepared to grow well in the heat of Phoenix. They are more forgiving for when people miss a watering and simply grow better because they are native either to Arizona or similar climates.

WHAT TREES TO AVOID PLANTING

Avoid trees with long trunks like the one you see ones you see in the picture, instead, try trees with shorter trunks or trees that are native to the desert climate of Phoenix. These desert type trees are able to withstand more wind damage and are adapted to the Phoenix soil, the nearby pests and other factors usual in the desert climate of Arizona. It is also good to avoid any trees which will need a lot of water. Forgetting to water these trees will have consequences and they simply do not weather as well as desert trees. Choose options like the Palo Verde Tree, Sissoo Tree, or Tipu Tree which are accustomed to the intense heat of Arizona.

WHERE & HOW TO PLANT TREES

Trees should be planted in groups to add extra protection to the surrounding trees and other plants. The location in your landscape you plant your trees should take into consideration how much sun each species needs. Some types of trees enjoy full sun all day long, others will benefit from having some afternoon shade. Ensure that trees are not planted too close to the house, power lines, or other structures. Try to plan ahead for the full mature size of the tree when choosing a spot so you don’t have to over trim or remove the tree later.

TREE PRUNING

Try not to prune too much after first planting the trees. They need all the energy they can get to ensure positive growth in the future. Do not remove the water sprouts. Look at the picture below. The water sprouts are the super small branches growing on the lower parts of the trunk and branches. These water sprouts are helpful to provide taper and additional strength to support the tree as it increases in weight over time. Water sprouts also help shade and prevent sun damage on the interior branches.

Tree pruning is similar to trimming, yet it is much more selective. When experts prune a tree the buds, twigs, roots, and branches all play a part in enhancing and creating the intended shape of the tree. Pruning generally results in more open structures between branches, in contrast to trimming which can create tight groupings of branches, twigs, and leaf cover. When trees are dead in on our properties they pose serious risk to properties near them. Most power and phone companies offer free limb removal if your tree is interfering with the lines. If that isn’t the case, or you want professional limb removal around these areas you can hire a tree trimming company. They will remove limbs that are reaching out for things that you don’t want damaged. They will also have your wishes in mind in the way that limbs are removed near power lines and won’t take the easy, chop everything away, approach.

The average cost of palm tree removal is $825. Palm tree removal costs ranged from $150 to $1,500 in the US for 2022.

PALM TREE REMOVAL COSTS

Palm tree removal costs are dependent on many different factors but the most important indicator of the price you will pay is the height of the tree! As when it comes to trimming a tree, the height of the tree has a large impact on the amount you will pay:

  • The average palm tree removal service for up to a 30 feet tall tree is $215. Palm tree removal service for up to a 30 feet tall tree ranged from $108 to $322 in 2022.

These prices usually include the cutting of the palm tree down into a short stump. In some cases, they may also include the cutting up of the trunk into smaller sections, though you may have to pay extra for that.

Consider that some additional items can add to the total cost of your palm tree removal including the following.

HAUL AWAY TRUNK – You could pay up to $250 more to have the trunk sections hauled away as well.

MILEAGE – There is usually a charge for travel and mileage when palm tree removal services have to come from outside of the immediate area.

ROPE DOWN THE PALM TREE – It will add significantly to the bill If the palm tree grows dangerously close to a building or other obstacle, it will need to be roped down in sections.

STUMP REMOVAL – You can expect to pay an additional $74 to $215 If you’d like the stump to be ground away.

Trying to remove or even cutting down a palm tree is dangerous for yourself and others and that is why despite the seemingly high costs, it really is worth it to have this job done by a professional arborist or contractor. Even trimming a palm tree can be dangerous and runs the rick of the tree suffering and maybe dying due to incorrect trimming techniques.

COST TO REMOVE PALM TREES BY SIZE

Below are the average costs you can expect to pay for palm tree removal by various sizes. Please note the last figure would apply if there are special circumstances that make the removal less simple, such as a lack of space.

  • The average small palm (15 feet) removal cost is $125. The average small palm (15 feet) removal cost ranged from $108 to $142 in 2021. Special circumstances up to $215.
  • The average medium palm (15-24 feet) removal cost is $215. The average medium palm (15-24 feet) removal cost ranged from $179 to $250 in 2021. Special circumstances up to $322.

PALM REMOVAL COST FACTORS

SIZE OF THE PALM – It is not only the height but the girth of the palm tree to be removed that has an impact on the total cost. The larger the trunk, the more expensive it becomes to remove.

ACCESSIBILITY AND LOCATION – Access to the tree is a major factor when determining the removal cost. This takes more manpower to remove the tree, especially if the tree is in the back and you have no vehicle access to the rear of the property. Conversely, a tree with a lot of space around it should be cheaper.

NUMBER OF TREES – You can get additional value if you have a number of trees to remove. Contact us today for further details!

STUMP REMOVAL – Palm stumps are quite soft so it usually will not cost more than about $50 for stump removal. Larger stumps (more than 15 inches) may cost more.

Getting Rid of the Stump

When it comes to palm tree stump removal, the first option is to dig out the stump. Whether or not this is a good idea depends on the size of the stump and root ball.Smaller palms with shallow root systems can occasionally be dug up with just a shovel and possibly a tool. For anything larger, however, you’ll need to utilize an electric shovel.

Large palm stumps, however, may be nearly impossible to remove even with one of these guys.

If you’re trying to figure out how to dig up a palm tree stump, start by slicing around the base to try to cut off any surface roots. With the shovel or a crowbar, you might be able to lever the stump out of the earth as you move deeper down.

TOOLS & SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED INCLUDE
TWO LADDERS, TWIST TIES, OUTDOOR EXTENSION CORD, LIGHT DUTY STAPLE GUN, MULTIPLE STRINGS LIGHTS AND A HELPER.

WRAPPING PALM TREES

Make sure you have everything you need before you get started so you don’t have to pause and run to the store. Leaving ladders or tools out while you are gone creates safety hazards and taking everything back in is a hassle.

Using Chemicals to Rot the Stump

Chemical rotting of the palm tree stump is a frequent method of palm tree stump removal. Palm tree stump rotting aids, not to be confused with palm tree stump killer, usually contain some sort of nitrogen.

Because wood requires nitrogen to form, supplementing it with more of this nutrient might hasten the process. You can even drill holes into the palm tree stump to speed up the process. After that, put the decaying aid in place and wait.

You can also use nitrogen-based fertilizer instead of commercial rotting aids if you have some on hand.

If you have a palm stump that needs to be killed with a palm stump killer, such as a yucca palm, there are devices on the market that can do both tasks at once.

However, there are a few drawbacks to these options. To begin with, if you choose a rotting aid that also serves as a stump killer, it will almost certainly be hazardous, posing a risk to you, your garden, and the ecosystem as a whole.

Simple rotting aids with a high potassium nitrate content are less harmful. They are not, in fact, hazardous to your garden or groundwater. They are, however, harmful to people, so you’ll want to wear protective gear when applying them and make sure pets and youngsters can’t get to the stump afterwards.

Another disadvantage of using rotten methods to remove palm tree stumps is that it takes time. If you need your stump removed in a matter of days or weeks, decaying procedures will not suffice.

Instead, you’ll have to wait a few months for the stump to decompose. The decomposed debris can now be removed and disposed of in your compost or a garden bed, and the ground can be leveled.

Naturally Rotting the Stump

Do you enjoy the concept of your stump withering away but prefer to take the natural route? If that’s the case, you can still speed things up organically by covering the palm stump with a natural nitrogen supply. The nitrogen will then naturally accelerate the deterioration of your stump’s timber.

Chicken manure, other manures, coffee grounds, bone meal, and grass clippings are all nitrogen-rich items.

To use one or more of these natural nitrogen sources on your palm stump, simply cover it in a layer of one or more of these materials. Check up on the decomposition after a few months to see how it’s doing. You can remove the decayed wood and level up the area if the stump is nicely rotted down.

It’s worth noting that this method isn’t as quick as utilizing stump-rotting chemicals. If you’re not in a hurry, however, what’s easier than covering a stump in a layer of grass clippings?

Naturally, if you are in a hurry, this solution will not solve your problem, so continue reading.

The Stump Is Being Burned

Burning is another option for removing recalcitrant stumps that has been utilized in the past. While we don’t encourage this strategy, we’ll go through it briefly so you can understand how it works.

To begin burning a palm tree stump, you’ll need a large amount of gasoline. The gasoline is then poured over the stump, soaking into the wood as thoroughly as possible

After that, it’s just a matter of lighting it.

The process, however, does not finish there. You’ll need to keep a close eye on your burning stump to avoid any mishaps. Before the base is burned into the earth, it may smolder for hours. You must ensure that the burning stump does not start a fire or go out of control during this time.

Burning a stump might be hazardous depending on the circumstances. Furthermore, it emits a lot of smoke and ash, and it may possibly be in violation of your homeowners’ agreement.

Furthermore, burning yard trash is detrimental for the environment in general. It generates unneeded carbon emissions when garden trash may be composted instead.

Getting Rid of the Stump

As you can see, removing a palm tree stump is a difficult task. In certain circumstances, though, there is no way around it. If you need to pave the land, for example, any stumps must be removed.

If the stump isn’t going to interfere with pavement or landscaping, however, it may not be necessary to totally remove it. Instead, you might want to consider hiding it.

Soil and landscaping ideas are one way to do this. If the stump is in a garden bed, you can order a load of topsoil and use it to create a planted mound over it.

Another option for concealing an old stump is to construct a rockery over it.

You can also plant a variety of small shrubs and bushes around the palm tree stump if you aren’t in a hurry to cover it up but want it hidden at some point. As they get taller, they will hide the stump.

How to Use a Stump Grinder

One of the most effective ways to get rid of a palm tree stump quickly is to utilize a stump grinder.

Stump grinders, as the name implies, are used to grind down stumps to the level of the earth. They not only remove the protruding stump, but they also prevent some tree species from resprouting.

You may be able to rent a stump grinder from a tool rental store depending on where you live. You’ll need a vehicle and someone on the opposite side to help you pull it off the back to bring it to your land.

After you’ve set up the stump grinder and it’s ready to start, you’ll need to run it back and forth over the stump.

Keep in mind that if your palm tree stump was not chopped near to the ground, you’ll have to recut it. Stump grinders can only be used on stumps that are a specific height. Anything that grows too tall will need to be clipped.

Using a chainsaw and cutting as near to the base as feasible is usually the easiest approach to trim an existing palm stump.

Hiring Heavy Equipment

Methods such as stump grinding and rotting may not be sufficient in some circumstances. Depending on what you plan to do with the location, you may need to entirely remove the palm tree trunk from the ground.

If this is the case, and you have a large stump, heavy equipment may be your only option. You can try digging out the stump, as indicated above, but this will only work for extremely small ones. Anything larger than a young palm will require something far more powerful than a spade to dig out.

Backhoes and diggers are commonly used for this task. You can be sure that your stump will come out with that much weight and power.

Unfortunately, this strategy has a few disadvantages. While you will be able to remove your stump, hiring heavy machinery, especially for a single stump, can be extremely pricey. In rare situations, you may be required to pay for the driver’s gasoline and time spent transporting the machine to your location. These expenses, as well as the hourly rate for having the equipment on-site, can add up quickly.

Furthermore, big machinery can wreak havoc on your lawn. The machine you hire may have to drive through beds and lawn areas, depending on the configuration of your garden. They can churn up the dirt, kill plants, and devastate your lawn here. Furthermore, they can damage your driveway by breaking pavers, compacting the soil, and causing it to become muddy.

If you and your family would love to have that wonderful winter wonderland look in your landscape, wrapping your outdoor trees in lights is the way to go. With some planning and a few measurements it can be easy and fun to get the spirit of the holidays.

CHOICE OF LIGHTS

One of the first things to think of is having brown cords for the light strands. They help hide the wires and make the lights more noticeable. Using LED lights cuts down on power consumption and glow without heat. They are safe and energy efficient option. If you want to add some pop you can choose to have a different color of lights at the top and in the fronds of your palm. Read the packaging as you select lights and make sure they are rated for outdoor use. Depending on the width of the trunk and height of the tree you will need more strands. You will also want to buy more if you want a tight coil of lights and a brighter look.

WRAPPING

Make coiled balls of the light strands to make them easy to handle. You will be able to let them unwind as you go around the tree. Wrap the lights starting at the base of your palm and wind your way up the tree. If the strands of lights are slipping use the light duty staple gun to secure them in place. Make sure you are straddling the wire and not shooting through it with your staple gun. This can be a fire hazard, so take care when using your staple gun. For higher areas break out the ladders and have a friend help you continue to wind the lights up the tree. You can hand the ball of lights back and forth.

LIGHTING FRONDS

Once you get all of the lights onto the trunk you need to decide if you are going to decorate the fronds, or leaves at the top. Decorating the fronds can be a little tricky but it can really set your landscape apart. If you decided to do this you can run a look of lights down a frond and secure it in place with your twist ties. Choose to light the fronds that are closest to you for safety. Once night falls the higher fronds won’t be visible.

SAFETY FIRST

The safety of you and your tree are paramount. No one enjoys the holidays when they have fallen from a ladder, got shocked from a wire, or if the tree gets sick from too many punctures. Follow these tips to help make the most of the holiday season.

  • Don’t over staple the strands of lights. Sometimes you won’t need any staples, but if the strands are slipping try to use as few staples as possible. Trees are living things and can be hurt by going too crazy with the staple gun.
  • Use outdoor light strands and outdoor extension cords. Electricity is a useful but dangerous power source and needs to be respected. Use the right strands and cords and make sure when you do have to staple a strand down to your palm that you are not piercing the insulation on the wires.
  • Never try to hand light strands that are plugged in. Not only does it make some types of lights hot to handle but it can lead to a serious shock. This is especially true during stapling of strands.

Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) are a striking sub-topical tree that is frequently used as a container and landscape plant in the United States. They are slow-growing trees with an odd, ornamental trunk that are more like a cycad than a real palm. When utilized in landscaping, they can improve the appearance of your property by adding curb appeal or backyard beauty. Although the Sago palm thrives in a range of situations, it must be pruned with care. The cutting back of fronds is an important element of Sago palm care. Pruning allows you to eradicate bug infestations, clear up trash within the plant, and make the palm a more appealing component of your home or landscape.

Frost Damage Pruning

Sago palms can withstand temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the fronds may die from frost exposure if the temperature drops below 15 degrees. When the threat of frost has gone, any frost-damaged leaves should be removed to protect the tree from losing nutrients.

Pruning is done once a year

Annually prune mature Sago palms to remove yellow-tipped, aged leaves. When your Sago palm is not generating new leaves, the optimum time to prune it is in the autumn. When the plant is actively growing, it does not like to be disturbed. Wear sturdy garden gloves and long sleeves to protect your hands from the spines on the fronds during pruning. Clip the lowest fronds as near to the trunk as possible with the clippers. Clear fronds can extend 6 inches to 2 feet up the trunk, depending on the size of your palm. To keep your palm tree from becoming plagued by insects, remove all yellow and brown fronds. Remove extra fronds during the trimming procedure to expose the trunk of your Sago palm for ornamental purposes.

Getting Rid of Flower Cones

Some gardeners prefer to remove the flower cones that grow in the heart of sago palms because they are ugly. Furthermore, the seeds that grow from the flower cone are deadly poisonous to both humans and animals, making it even more important to remove them, especially if you have young children or dogs that will be near the plants. If your Sago palm is in a safe location, it’s ideal to let the seed pod mature and fall off on its own, protecting the plant’s growing point in the center from damage; but you can remove the seeds and flower cone at any time without risking the plant’s growth or health.

Clear the area

Remove all debris and leaf litter from around the trunk of your Sago palm after trimming the leaves. This allows more air to reach the tree’s trunk and lower portion, which helps to maintain it healthy. The male plant can be allergic, which is why long sleeves are required when pruning, and all parts of the plant are hazardous. Dispose of debris with extreme caution. If you put plant matter in your yard waste or take it to the dump, make sure the people in charge are aware of its toxicity.
