Burning is another option for removing recalcitrant stumps that has been utilized in the past. While we don’t encourage this strategy, we’ll go through it briefly so you can understand how it works.

To begin burning a palm tree stump, you’ll need a large amount of gasoline. The gasoline is then poured over the stump, soaking into the wood as thoroughly as possible

After that, it’s just a matter of lighting it.

The process, however, does not finish there. You’ll need to keep a close eye on your burning stump to avoid any mishaps. Before the base is burned into the earth, it may smolder for hours. You must ensure that the burning stump does not start a fire or go out of control during this time.

CHOICE OF LIGHTS

One of the first things to think of is having brown cords for the light strands. They help hide the wires and make the lights more noticeable. Using LED lights cuts down on power consumption and glow without heat. They are safe and energy efficient option. If you want to add some pop you can choose to have a different color of lights at the top and in the fronds of your palm. Read the packaging as you select lights and make sure they are rated for outdoor use. Depending on the width of the trunk and height of the tree you will need more strands. You will also want to buy more if you want a tight coil of lights and a brighter look.

WRAPPING

Make coiled balls of the light strands to make them easy to handle. You will be able to let them unwind as you go around the tree. Wrap the lights starting at the base of your palm and wind your way up the tree. If the strands of lights are slipping use the light duty staple gun to secure them in place. Make sure you are straddling the wire and not shooting through it with your staple gun. This can be a fire hazard, so take care when using your staple gun. For higher areas break out the ladders and have a friend help you continue to wind the lights up the tree. You can hand the ball of lights back and forth.

LIGHTING FRONDS

Once you get all of the lights onto the trunk you need to decide if you are going to decorate the fronds, or leaves at the top. Decorating the fronds can be a little tricky but it can really set your landscape apart. If you decided to do this you can run a look of lights down a frond and secure it in place with your twist ties. Choose to light the fronds that are closest to you for safety. Once night falls the higher fronds won’t be visible.

SAFETY FIRST

The safety of you and your tree are paramount. No one enjoys the holidays when they have fallen from a ladder, got shocked from a wire, or if the tree gets sick from too many punctures. Follow these tips to help make the most of the holiday season.

  • Don’t over staple the strands of lights. Sometimes you won’t need any staples, but if the strands are slipping try to use as few staples as possible. Trees are living things and can be hurt by going too crazy with the staple gun.
  • Use outdoor light strands and outdoor extension cords. Electricity is a useful but dangerous power source and needs to be respected. Use the right strands and cords and make sure when you do have to staple a strand down to your palm that you are not piercing the insulation on the wires.
  • Never try to hand light strands that are plugged in. Not only does it make some types of lights hot to handle but it can lead to a serious shock. This is especially true during stapling of strands.

Sago palms (Cycas revoluta) are a striking sub-topical tree that is frequently used as a container and landscape plant in the United States. They are slow-growing trees with an odd, ornamental trunk that are more like a cycad than a real palm. When utilized in landscaping, they can improve the appearance of your property by adding curb appeal or backyard beauty. Although the Sago palm thrives in a range of situations, it must be pruned with care. The cutting back of fronds is an important element of Sago palm care. Pruning allows you to eradicate bug infestations, clear up trash within the plant, and make the palm a more appealing component of your home or landscape.

Frost Damage Pruning

Sago palms can withstand temperatures as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Some of the fronds may die from frost exposure if the temperature drops below 15 degrees. When the threat of frost has gone, any frost-damaged leaves should be removed to protect the tree from losing nutrients.

Pruning is done once a year

Annually prune mature Sago palms to remove yellow-tipped, aged leaves. When your Sago palm is not generating new leaves, the optimum time to prune it is in the autumn. When the plant is actively growing, it does not like to be disturbed. Wear sturdy garden gloves and long sleeves to protect your hands from the spines on the fronds during pruning. Clip the lowest fronds as near to the trunk as possible with the clippers. Clear fronds can extend 6 inches to 2 feet up the trunk, depending on the size of your palm. To keep your palm tree from becoming plagued by insects, remove all yellow and brown fronds. Remove extra fronds during the trimming procedure to expose the trunk of your Sago palm for ornamental purposes.

Getting Rid of Flower Cones

Some gardeners prefer to remove the flower cones that grow in the heart of sago palms because they are ugly. Furthermore, the seeds that grow from the flower cone are deadly poisonous to both humans and animals, making it even more important to remove them, especially if you have young children or dogs that will be near the plants. If your Sago palm is in a safe location, it’s ideal to let the seed pod mature and fall off on its own, protecting the plant’s growing point in the center from damage; but you can remove the seeds and flower cone at any time without risking the plant’s growth or health.

Clear the area

Remove all debris and leaf litter from around the trunk of your Sago palm after trimming the leaves. This allows more air to reach the tree’s trunk and lower portion, which helps to maintain it healthy. The male plant can be allergic, which is why long sleeves are required when pruning, and all parts of the plant are hazardous. Dispose of debris with extreme caution. If you put plant matter in your yard waste or take it to the dump, make sure the people in charge are aware of its toxicity.
